A Girl Who Became a Mountain (2021) is a comic art dealing with the issue of child marriage in Chad. The comic tells the story of Aysha, a fictional character whose story is based both in a local legend as well as in actual events known to the artist. Sara hopes to raise awareness and connect the Dallas audience to organizations working on the prevention of child marriage like Girls Not Brides, a global partnership of more than 1500 civil society organisations committed to ending child marriage and enabling girls to fulfil their potential.

The recordings are of the artist’s mother Milcah and her cousin Bernice.

Sara Yassoumali was born in 2003, in Ivory Coast to a father of Central African Republic descent and mother of Cameroon descent. She attended elementary school in Koumassi, Ivory Coast.  In 2009, the family attempted to move back to the Central African Republic, but was forced to stay in Chad due to the violence ahead. She attended middle school in Moursal, Chad, and spent the summers in Cameroon. In 2017, the family moved to Dallas, Texas, and Sara enrolled in Lake Highlands High School, Richardson ISD.  Sara encountered racial prejudice, but she overcame the social persecution and focused on her education. She will graduate in May 2021. Her plans are to attend Richland Community College and continue her studies to become a pediatrician. Sara understands Basa, Sango and Arabic, the languages of her parents and is fluent in French and English.
